About Susan Ann Varady, Ph.D.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
Susan Ann Varady graduated cum laude from Princeton University where she majored in History,
completed the pre-veterinary medicine program, earned her certificate in Hellenic Studies, and was
captain of the equestrian team. Upon graduation she conducted research in adolescent social phobia
at Stanford University's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine. She completed her
doctoral training at George Mason University in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. She trained
at Georgetown University, George Washington University, and community agencies in the area.
After earning her Ph.D., Dr. Varady worked as a senior clinician at the Western Psychiatric Institute
and Clinic – part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She was the director of residency
psychotherapy training, a lead clinician at the adult mood and anxiety intensive outpatient program,
and a clinical evaluator for a research study examining interpersonal functioning in Borderline
Personality Disorder. Dr. Varady also conducted “Entering the Ministry” evaluations for the
Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute.
Dr. Varady’s training and past experience covers a wide variety of patients, settings, and modalities.
She has worked with children, adolescents, and adults in individual, couples, group, and family
therapy. She has conducted a variety of psychological assessments, performed psychology research
and consultation, and frequently engages in outreach activities.
In March 2005 Dr. Varady began her independent practice in Charlotte, North Carolina. In addition
to her clinical work, she was a faculty member at the Carolina Institute for Clinical Pastoral Training
from 2006 - 2009. As a member of the faculty, she provided group and individual supervision and
taught courses including Diagnosis and Transference Phenomena. Dr. Varady has also served as a
consultant for the Presbyterian Samaritan Counseling Center, also in Charlotte, NC. In July 2009,
Dr. Varady relocated her practice to Chapel Hill, NC. Dr. Varady is currently studying at the
Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas to deepen her theoretical knowledge and sharpen her
psychotherapeutic skills. In addition, she is a psychotherapy supervisor for psychiatry residents at
UNC. Dr. Varady serves as the chair of the program committee for the NC Psychoanalytic Society
and is a member of the society's board.
