Psychological Services
CLINICAL SERVICES PROVIDED
Dr. Susan Ann Varady is a clinical psychologist licensed in North Carolina. She provides individual
and couples psychotherapy to adolescents and adults. Sessions are usually scheduled once or
twice per week and last 45 minutes. Her psychological assessment practice is currently limited to
personality and diagnostic assessment.
Dr. Varady treats people with a wide variety of issues including (but not limited to): depression,
anxiety, relationship problems, grief and loss, body image concerns, eating disorders, weight loss,
career counseling, stress and time management, athletic performance enhancement, personality
disorders, and past trauma. The duration of treatment and frequency of sessions varies greatly
depending on the nature of a client's difficulties.
Dr. Varady has been trained in a number of empirically supported treatments for psychological
problems. These include Cognitive-Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Interpersonal
Therapy, and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. Dr. Varady's training and experience allow her to
create a treatment plan that will meet your unique needs.
It is Dr. Varady's philosophy that nearly all people can benefit from psychotherapy at some point in
their lives. She knows it can be difficult to reach out and make the first contact with a therapist, but it
is an important first step to reduced distress, improved relationships, greater self-awareness, and
a balanced life. Dr. Varady firmly believes that the fit between patient and doctor is vital to
successful treatment - this is true in all areas of healing. Please feel free to consult with Dr. Varady
by phone or attend an initial session before committing to ongoing treatment.
Dr. Varady does not prescribe medication. If she determines that medication might be helpful, she
will assist you with finding a psychiatrist and will request your permission to remain in contact with
your prescribing doctor.
Please contact Dr. Varady to discuss scheduling and fees. Dr. Varady does not bill insurance
companies directly. She will provide documentation necessary for "out-of-network" reimbursement.
ATHLETES:
As a former collegiate athlete and group fitness instructor, Dr. Varady appreciates the "mental side"
of training and competition. During her pre-doctoral internship, she specialized in work with
athletes and was a liaison to The George Washington University athletic department. In addition to
her general psychology work, Dr. Varady specializes in anxiety management, time management,
performance enhancement, visualisation, and team building. She will work closely with your
coach, nutritionist, physiologist, etc, to help you reach your performance goals while maintaining
balance and success in other areas of life.
Dr. Varady previously practiced under the name "Susan Varady Carpenter."
